Music Gear

Here’s a list of my music gear that I use on my gigs. I’m always changing my music gear around so be sure to check back here for new updates!

Bass Guitars

Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 5 – this is not my exact bass but very close! I love my EBMM StingRay 5 bass guitar- 5 string adds flexibility for playing shapes up the neck to get a bit more bass in my tone.

Peavey GRIND BASS 5 STRING BXP NATURAL Grind 5 String Electric Bass Guitar, Natural Wood – this is not the exact bass, but a similar modern equivalent. I use a vintage Made-in-USA Peavey Foundation 5 string tuned a half-step down for certain songs in the set like Green Day. I got mine for a steal at a pawn shop in Meridian, MS where Peavey is headquartered!

Gretsch Streamliner Jet Club Short-scale Electric Bass Guitar – Shell Pink – this is the exact model I use. The short scale has been fun to play around with! The best part of this bass is how light it is, especially compared to my EBMM Stingray 5! On long gigs, or double-headers, I often opt for this bass to help save my back a bit. Swapping the factory strings for a set of DR Hi-Beam short scale strings, as well as tightening down some of the hardware, really helped with the tuning stability!

Amplification / Signal Chain

Gallien-Krueger NEO 2×12-inch – this is the latest updated version of my main bass amp cabinet. It weighs a lot but the tone is worth it!

Ampeg Venture V7 Bass Guitar Head 700 Watts – this is the modern equivalent of the head that I have – the Ampeg Portaflex PF800.

MXR® Bass D.I.+ – this is my main preamp pedal. I place it before my bass head and generally keep the EQ pretty flat. The color switch is what really adds the magic sauce. I do use the distortion on some songs to thicken up the sound a bit or if the original recording has distorted bass. It’s great to have another DI XLR out in addition to the one on the bass head.

BOSS LS-2 Line Selector Pedal – this is essential for gigs where I am playing two basses. This allows for a seamless quick switch between basses during a set. You can also set individual input levels which helps with basses that have different output levels before it hits the head (active/passive or hotter vs vintage pickups).

TC Electronic POLYTUNE 3 NOIR – I use a Polytune 2 but this is the modern equivalent. Essential for playing in tune with the band!

TC Helicon VOICETONE T1 Single-Button Stompbox – on gigs where we run our own sound, I run my vocals through this pedal which makes it easier to dial in a quick good vocal sound for us.

TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik M80 Dynamic Microphone – this is my vocal microphone. I did a summer college internship at Telefunken and they gifted this to me at the end! After all these years, I still use the same one on every gig!

Pedaltrain Nano+ 18 X5 Inches Pedalboard with Soft Case – This fits about 4/5 pedals depending on the size. This is perfect for a bass player who just needs a few pedals and is trying to keep the gear light and footprint small!

Consumables

DR Strings Hi-Beam Stainless Steel Medium 5-String Bass Strings – these strings are amazing and I believe are a big part of my tone. The first time I played a bass that was strung with a set of these, I knew it was the tone I’d been looking for for forever. Now, it’s the only string I use (except on my basses with flatwounds). They are super bright and wear in nicely too, retaining a nice top end even as they wear.

Dunlop Tortex Standard .88mm Green Guitar Pick – these picks are very thick- great for aggressive playing and using with thicker bass strings! Just beware the green dust they give off if using on round-wound strings.

Utilities / Other Music Gear

Zoom H1 XLR 2-Channel Recorder – this is what I use to record my direct bass guitar signal out of my head or DI pedal.

Lasko Portable Utility Fan, 12” 289 CFM Pivoting High Velocity Air Mover Blower Fan, 3 Speeds, 2 Accessory Outlets 120V, Black, U12104 – I joke that this is my most essential piece of gear. Doesn’t matter the time of year- this baby is blowing at my back keeping me cool on stage!

KitchenClouds Kitchen Mat Cushioned Anti Fatigue Rug 17.3″x28″ Water Resistant, Non Slip, Standing and Comfort Desk/Floor Mats for House Sink Office (Black) – this really helps with fatigue on stage during those long gigs!
